FAQ About Using A Fire Extinguisher In The Workplace
Posted on: 2 November 2015
Fire safety in the workplace is more than just ensuring that you have fire extinguishers available. Your employees need to be properly trained on assessing a fire and knowing when is a good time to use the fire extinguisher. To ensure that your employees are properly prepared for any fire emergency, here is what you need to know.
When Should a Fire Extinguisher Not Be Used?
Every fire in the workplace does not automatically mean someone should reach for a fire extinguisher. Some situations are just too dangerous and could result in injury or worse. For instance, your employees should not attempt to put out a fire that is too large. Fires that involve flammable solvents or that are hidden behind the ceiling or wall are not considered good situations in which to use a fire extinguisher.
If it is too hot or smoky, or your employees are unable to breathe, a fire extinguisher should not be used. A lack of air can cause a person to suffer from smoke inhalation and render him or her unable to move or seek a safe environment.
A fire can grow out of control quickly, so your employees should not consider using an extinguisher if there is not a clear cut path to exit the building in case the fire grows.
What Safety Procedures Should Be Followed?
In addition to knowing how to use the fire extinguisher, your employees need to know that it is important to call 9-1-1 immediately after assessing the fire and determining that the extinguisher should not be used.
They should also be aware that it is important to evacuate as soon as possible if the fire extinguisher is empty and the fire is still not out after spraying it.
How Should the Extinguisher Be Used?
When it comes to using a fire extinguisher, the PASS method should be followed. The method involves:
- Pulling the pin from the fire extinguisher.
- Aiming the nozzle at the bottom of the fire.
- Squeezing the handle.
- Sweeping the nozzle back and forth until the fire is out.
Review the PASS method with your employees on a regular basis to ensure that everyone is aware of how to safely use the fire extinguisher.
Work with a fire extinguisher dealer like 3D Fire & Safety Ltd to ensure that the equipment is properly maintained and ready to use. The dealer can also help you identify how many extinguishers you need for your business and which sizes are best.
